Stefan Thiel's striking, powerful artwork looks as if it had been painted with thick Sumi ink: his blacks are impenetrable. The works are, in fact, silhouetted paper cutouts attached to a light grey cardboard. Bordering on abstraction, the use of negative space and wavy, liquid-looking lines bear testimony to the finesse with which the artist wields an X-Acto knife. Despite its literal flatness, the work shows a large suggestion of depth. Starting point of Stefan Thiel's compositions are mostly his own photographs. In his recent work Thiel also uses brown coloured paper on a slightly darker grey background, allowing colour to play a more important role. His topics vary from people to architecture and nature, and also patterns like the work above.
