13 november tot 24 december image: artist: Klaus Merkel title: Stack David Reed, 2004 size: 69 x 97 cm - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dear David, Recently an idea developed for a show on painting which should take place in our gallery coming November - December. The show is supposed to include work of Jos Van Merendonk, Klaus Merkel and Martijn Schuppers, who already committed to participate, and Bernard Frize, who will receive this invitation as well. We would very much like to invite you to complete a presentation of works of five painters. Your way of working regularly plays a role in the discourse on painting in our gallery, as I mentioned to you on the last ArtCologne already.The common ground would be that the participating artists all have been working in a strong and individual way in a painterly field that I would like to describe with the working title for the exhibition Gesture Suggestion. My wife (and partner in the gallery) Francis Boeske and I (and the other artists that we propose for this show as well) have been admirers of your work and of the convincing position you manage to define in the world of painting. It is not our intention to develop an educational show, on the contrary. We think it is important to make a show concerning the painterly position shared by the participating artists, to enrich the way that people look at painting and to counter the always and continuingly popular, but so often uninspired and boring narration. We have three spaces: the main room is 10 x 6 meters, a side room is 3 x 3 meters, and then a beautiful daylight back room measuring 5 x 5 meters. Our office space often participates in the exhibitions and would be included in this case. We intend to present two works per artist of at least medium size. We hope, being a commercial gallery, to be able to offer works that are for sale, but we realise that specifically with you, we would be happy and proud to have one work for sale and another on loan through one of the galleries that represent your work or from one of the collectors we know. The exhibition will be curated by Jos van Merendonk and myself. Would you be so kind to seriously consider excepting our invitation?
