4 september tot 3 oktober From the 4th of September until the 3rd of October VOUS ETES ICI shows new paintings by the Dutch artist Ab van Hanegem (*Vlissingen, The Netherlands, 1960). Van Hanegem lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. He was educated at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst St. Joost in Breda and at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. His paintings are shown in important (corporate) collections like the Dutch telephone company (KPN), the AKZO Nobel Art Foundation and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In the beginning of his career Van Hanegem was influenced by the Italian Renaissance. Especially the use of perspective by the 14th century artists Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti were of great importance to him. In 1988 Van Hanegem depicted the landscapes of the Lorenzetti brothers in his own paintings and combinded them with his own experimenting view of perspective, thus drawing an interesting paralel between the old and the new. Around 1993 the figurative aspect in Van Hanegems paintings disappeared and made way for a style that was more concerned with experimenting with perspective in the painting itself and the point of view of the beholder. Van Hanegem commited himself to a large amount of freedom in the composition of the image, mainly through the stylistic way he used the wide brushstrokes that became part of the subject of the work itself. This work showed a space filled with patterns and colourful interactions. The use of airbrush, which was used to provide a sort of 3d blobs in the paintings, only made the spacial illusion in the painting stronger. Space and the indication of space is a new development in the work of Van Hanegem. Instead of the brushstrokes and the expressive use of colour that resulted in the dynamics and the space of the painting, Van Hanegem nowadays represents his newest paintings as futuristic innerspaces. An example of a certain futuristic space is the painting Cyclotron. A cylcotron is a particle accelerator that is used for scientific research in physics. The threedimensional character and the large size of the painting pulls the beholder almost into the futuristic space of the painting itself. You feel like you're swirling in the particle accelerator of Van Hanegem. |
