6 september tot 4 oktober Martijn Schuppers, who studied at Minerva Academy in Groningen, Hunter College in New York and finished with a post-graduate study at the Frank Mohr-institute, shows recent works, in which he brings his monochromatic starting point into a new area of possibilities. Schuppers' paintings seem to offer photographic as well as computerrelated aspects. Nothing could be further from the truth, though. Schuppers is a true painter who uses several of the traditional ways of applying and moving the paint over the canvas. As viewers we are misled by the resulting intricate patterns that we are confronted with. These seem to refer to surfaces of planets or microscopical details of cellular textures. Through these optical illusions Schuppers manages to draw us closer to the painterly aspects of his work and forces us to reconsider the way our perception feeds us information. The illusion of depth, colour and light become even more surprising once we find that Schuppers' works are as flat as the original empty canvas. |
