Steinfeld started her career in 1992 at the Kunstacademie in Düsseldorf, Germany, where she was tought by the famous photography couple Bernd and Hilla Becher. In 1995 Steinfeld joined the classes of the Dutch artist Jan Dibbets on the same academy. In her photography one finds references to different art disciplines such as performance, sculpture and theatre. This interesting amalgam resulted in 1997 in the photo series Born to be Kings, of which several are shown in this exhibition.

Born to be Kings is based on the popularity of soccer players like the Argentinian star Maradona. This photo series came into existence when Steinfeld was filming herself with a videocamera while she was playing soccer in her own studio. During these takes she was trying to hide the footballs underneath her clothes, resulting in grotesque forms coming out of her body. In these photo's Steinfeld is dressed up as a soccerplayer and playing with volumes. With this photoserie she refers to the macho-world of soccer, in this picture represented by a female in a grotesque body, something that would never appear in this male dominated culture.

In her more recent photographs Steinfeld emphasizes less the bodycontour but much more the material that she uses in her photo's. She wraps her body in aluminium, bubblewrap and gold-foil. In this way her body is protected and sheltered to the outside world. The unusual material that Steinfeld wraps around her body is not very attractive to the viewer of her work, but on the other side she takes a challenging pose towards the viewer, as if she wants to hit on him. Humor is another important element in her work with which she adresses her public.
