Referring to its rich history, painting for Van Hanegem is optimized for the transport of illusion. Even though images from day to day reality are avoided, the components that currently surface in his works can hardly be called abstract.
The large brush strokes can just as good be considered as "portraits" of brush strokes. Areas of color force themselves under and over competing color fields, creating unlimited scale. Drops and blobs, often suggesting transparency, seemingly deform underlying traces of paint. Multi colored snakes swerve in these supernatural landscapes. And recently Van Hanegem returned to his old love for perspective and architecture, adding floating constructive elements.
