15 maart tot 15 april The young Dutch painter Lieven Hendriks (NL-Velp, 1970) reduces the act of painting to its most elementary aspects. Washes of paint develop into figuration, emphasizing a monochrome background. Reflecting on art history, both Andy Warhol and Barnett Newman seem to be of importance to Hendriks. In terms of reduction and subtleness, Hendriks follows a tradition that started with Vermeer of Delft. Representation in Hendriks' works seems clueless at first sight. Simple subjects in his work are often retaken, bottles floating in space, plastic cups balancing on a shelve, a carpet, a cupboard, or light as an ambient substance on the surface of the painting itself. Like in the movies of Douglas Sirk, figurative drama develops on a sublevel. The soft, fresco-like skin of the paintings, all acrylic on canvas, maintains a very close relationship to the viewer. |
