9 november tot 21 december Pousttchi's touching video Die Knappen introduces us to probably the smallest carnival music group from Cologne during their rehearsals in a local sports hall. It immediately becomes clear that we witness a serious event. All participants play their instruments with the highest possible concentration. The musical result, though, might be called rather mediocre. Not every musician manages to stay in sync. The next obvious aspect is their rather low social status. They are cheaply dressed and faces and bodies show the affect of alcohol and junk food. Still, the overall impression of this 4 minutes and 25 seconds work is one of great respect for their humble attempt of fulfilling their combined dreams to present music to the world during the most prominent happening of the year. Laola shown combined with Südkurve and Fans makes us participants in a mass gathering. The nature of this gathering is unclear. It could for instance be a soccer game, or a pop concert. The monitor shows an eternal wave (Laola), people standing up and raising their hands to the sky. The set of 18 photo's zooms in on the fans. The prints were digitally treated with a watercolour-like result. Just like in Pousttchi's earlier blood cell photo's, the painterly aspect of these images enhances our perception. Just like in Die Knappen Pousttchi ads props to the installation turning it into a sculpture, in this case several transport pallets, sound amplifiers and a guitar case. Since the work has no sound it breaths an atmosphere of anticipation. The viewer might have been given a position backstage, or on the podium as the performer him or herself. |
